VETS, veterinary pharmacists and others have met at a public workshop to discuss dispensing of veterinary prescription-only medicines (POMs).
The meeting was the latest stage in the re-evaluation of the practice of allowing virtually all POMs to be dispensed only by vets and the effects this might have on availability and price.
The work is being carried out by the Independent Review of Dispensing by Veterinary Surgeons as part of the Government's Action Plan for Farming.
At the workshop written and oral submissions ranging from letters from pet owners to representations from organisations including the NFU and British Veterinary Association were considered.
The group has also met European bodies to learn how veterinary medicines are made available in the EU.
The group is on schedule to make its recommendations to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food by March 31.
