MIDDLETON-in-Lonsdale, by the people of Middleton, published by Stramongate Press, Kendal (£10 from The Head pub and The Swan Inn in Middleton.)
MIDDLETON-in-Lonsdale, the book, is a lasting record of an oft-forgotten village which is smaller today than 100 years ago, and the residents of its past and present.
Thanks to extensive research by villagers who have captured in print their homes and surroundings to mark the Millennium, the book reveals the changes which have affected Middleton's landscape, properties and people.
Its illustrated pages feature details of the village, including historic tales of its fell, roads, shops, railway and schools, including original photographs and notes taken from school records books.
It also gives a real insight into the customs and traditions of Middleton, from farming to sporting and social occasions.
The book, which is a must for anyone with connections in Middleton and those with an interest in local history, also pays a tribute to Middleton's sons whose lives were lost in the First World War, and to those who survived World War Two.
Villager Hazel Watson, who explained that the Millennium project had snowballed to become a real community effort, said: "Everybody was full of enthusiasm, and so much came to light that we didn't know or had forgotten."
