GYPSUM in Cumbria: Ian Tyler (Blue Rock Publications).
Mining historian Ian Tyler takes a look at the miners' struggle for survival deep under Cumbrian soil in the sixth book in his series.
Focusing attention on the Gypsum and Anhydrite mining, which has its roots in this county, Ian tells the story in chronological order, illustrated by 125 black-and-white photos and diagrams.
Accounts of people's lifestyle is interweaved with reflections on the communities in which they live to give a readable and informative view of how the industry developed, without becoming too bogged down in detail.
Mines at Sandwith, Barrowmouth, Kirkby Thore and Cotehill, close to where the author lives, are included.
Beginning modestly with hard-working men swinging picks and shovelling rock into carts, the book tells a tale of how giants of the industry moved in and built new plants to create jobs in the post-war years.
The 285-page soft-backed book is available in major bookshops throughout Cumbria and signed copies can be bought at Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum, Threlkeld, near Keswick, for £ 15.99.
