Home-Start, the national organisation for supporting families with young children, has launched a new scheme covering South Lakeland.
Funding has been secured from a number of sources including the Lottery and Scott Trusts for an initial period of three years.
Stephen Bolton, the recently-appointed organiser of Home-Start South Lakeland, explained he would be preparing a team of volunteers which would support local families in Kendal and other parts of South Lakeland.
Home-Start works by visiting families in their homes for two to three hours a week.
"We offer friendship, a listening ear and practical support," said Mr Bolton.
Anyone who wishes to find out more about the scheme, or is interested in becoming a volunteer is asked to contact Mr Bolton on 01539 727333.
