It all started with a conversation down the pub.
Friends decided that what Kendal Sales Consultant Robin Bartlett really needed on the cusp of his fortieth year was a fresh challenge.
The London Marathon seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
Since this pact six months ago, Mr Bartlett, a salesman at Kentdale Land Rover, has undergone a transformation.
A man who described himself to the Westmorland Gazette as "not sporty" and even "not really a runner" is jogging five to seven miles every night.
He has swapped his 19 and a half stone physique for an altogether trimmer model weighing in at 14 and a half stone.
Despite admitting to "feeling a bit nervy," he is now fit and ready to run The London Marathon on April 22.
To make his pain really worthwhile, Mr Bartlett has decided to run for the charity Antenatal Results and Choices.
ARC supported Mr Bartlett and his wife when a pregnancy scan revealed a foetal abnormality.
The charity specialises in giving expert advice to doctors and providing support and information to parents dealling with the results of antenatal scans.
Mr Bartlett hopes to raise £ 2,000 for ARC so it can carry on its work.
So far the sponsorship is stacking up nicely.
Kentdale Land Rover is supporting Mr Bartlett to the tune of £500, with other donations the fund is up to £1,300.
Anyone who wishes to donate can contact Mr Bartlett at Kentdale Land Rover on 01539 814444.
