FLAGGING tourism information officers are to be given a staffing boost to help them keep pace with demand for information during the foot-and-mouth crisis.
Tourism Information Centre officers have been struggling to answer the extra inquiries generated by foot-and-mouth restrictions and, as sections of the fells and countryside reopen, officers have been inundated with requests for information.
South Lakeland District Council's policy and resources committee heard how tourism information centre
managers needed extra funds to pay staff to cover more hours at the centre.
Despite budget pressures facing the council, members voted to approve a request for an extra £8,000 but
stipulated that the equivalent sum in cash savings should be sought elsewhere in the budget.
Treasurer Jack Jones said: " Obviously this is not a normal year for the tourism industry."
The committee passed a vote of thanks to TIC employees.
