A QUIET night in may never be the same again thanks to a quirky couple of musicians who are hell-bent on bringing sounds to your living room.
Lancaster improvisers James Wood and Steve Lewis, aka Living Room, are bringing their unique slant on music out of the auditorium and into your back yard - should you so desire.
Chairs, tables, newspapers, spoons and forks - even snippets of your own conversation - will be picked up by the pair of performers as they improvise a music session that has been tailored to your home.
Whatever the occasion - formal dinner party, birthday parties or chilled out afternoons in the garden - Living Room will pop round to your pad and whip up a bespoke performance.
The pair of professional musicians guarantee their set will be a unique
tailor-made experience.
Percussionist Steve Lewis explained where the distinctly off-beat concept of Living Room sprang from.
"James and I were doing a lot of improvising in his front room and we thought 'how can we take this out to an audience'.
We were thinking of the type of space we would like to use and decided to stick with living rooms."
From then on the musicians set about securing funding with the help of Breaking Borders - a scheme set up by Northern Arts, North West Arts and the Arts Council of England specifically to support music projects that go across geographical boundaries.
James said: "It is great news for us because we wanted our residency to include places like Bentham and Kendal, which feel like part of the locality."
The pair, who create sound-scapes from their immediate environment, are not to everyone's taste but Steve thinks once people give it a go they start to "get it."
Responses to their music have ranged from rave reviews - " like folk music from an undiscovered country" to "two shaman of music" - to the more scathing "it is like Picasso in music - and not everyone likes Picasso."
Steve, a former writer or journalist who now also works as a psychotherapist said: "It is part of an aesthetic belief that we have - the world is full of opportunities to make music.
