A TIME-capsule which depicts life in Ireby and Leck parish at the start of this century, will be opened by residents in 50 years' time.

The capsule, which contains details and photographs about parish residents, was deposited in the belfry of St Peter's Church, Leck, on St Peter's Day.

The youth club committee and leaders who proposed the idea, hope that many of the younger people in the parish will be present when the capsule is officially opened in 2050.

Among the information in the capsule is a list of all residents in the parish, along with details of some weddings and photographs.

A history of the youth club is included along with a short biography of its founder and a principal fund-raiser, Harry Parkes.

A list of prices for everyday groceries will give the mid-century residents some idea of the cost of living, alongside bills for petrol, council tax, take-away food and fish and chips.

The names of children at Leck School have been included, as have a list of national events at the turn of the century, and details of local businesses in the parish which have now closed.

Structural changes to the area are recorded on photographs, such as the dismantling of the railway and the new road through Cowan Bridge to Kirkby Lonsdale.

St Peter's bell ringers performed both before and after the event.

Thanks were expressed to everyone who had made a contribution towards the capsule contents.
