KENDAL RUFC coach Peter Kremer is facing a renewed battle against the cancer that struck him last season and is likely to be out for long periods as he undergoes further prolonged treatment.
While he is absent, the club have appointed Penrith-based Mark Bowman as assistant coach with responsibility for the forwards to work alongside Mike Healey, who has a corresponding role with the backs.
Director of Rugby Chris Hayton said: "Peter has had a serious recurrence of the problem and faces an intensive course of chemotherapy which means he will be away from the club for long periods in the build-up to the season and during the the early part of it."
Bowman, aged 26, moved from Wigton to join Kendal but left the club, along with Kremer, for a season at Orrell three season ago.
He was dogged by a long-term groin injury and only resumed playing first-team rugby for Kendal last year.
"Mark is well known to supporters as a robust, dynamic back-row forward and he is looking to expand his experience and role at the club," said Hayton.
"It will also enable us to maintain our links in the north of the county while Peter is in hospital."
