YOUNG people in Eden are enjoying ecological and artistic fun in the summer holidays thanks to Eden Community Outdoors.
The future of the summer holiday scheme, which is in its fourth year, was in doubt after sites which were to be used became out-of-bounds due to foot-and-mouth restrictions.
But at the 11th hour, new areas were found and in the first week of the summer break eight to13-year-olds enjoyed the open spaces around Acorn Bank and the activities organised from the double-decker eco-bus which runs on recycled chip fat.
This week and from August 6 to10, the eco bus is parked at Eden Bank Farm, Ormside.
The young people will follow ancient maps, go on quests and will help an alchemist make gold.
The August programme will include drama and culminate in an outdoor performance to which friends and family can attend.
On Thursdays the group will be sleeping outdoors and the fun will include a campfire dinner.
For the 14-plus age group there will be a free youth festival from July 31 to August 3 at Jubilee Bridge, Appleby which will include art, putting up a tepee, workshops in DJ-ing, fire dancing and jamming, drumming and rapping are also on the agenda.
On the last day there will be a free Salsa workshop.
Week long schemes have limited spaces and need to be pre-booked but the youth festival is open to all without booking.
