AFTER an eventful week of racing the Royal Windermere Yacht Club's Forwood Trophy went to John and Tim Baron's Mistral.
One win and two second places in the three-race series gave Mistral a total of 49 points, seven more than John Curtis' Deva, with Fred Tattersall's Liberty third on 39.
The series had really opened with the three lead boats in the Monday race all sailing the wrong course, as reported in last week's Gazette.
Tuesday saw the fleet involved in a close race over the club course that takes the yachts to Blakeholme in the south and then round the most northerly mark in the north lake, Pullwyke.
Chas Ingham's Chameleon led round Blakeholme, but the race remained close all the way back to Bowness.
Deva led a tightly-packed group of half-a-dozen yachts as they swept through the Ferry narrows.
Mistral, David McCann's Freedom, Chameleon, Brian Ellis' Falcon and Liberty were all there through the Cockshott bottleneck.
In the north lake, with a wind now more westerly, Mistral reached away to build a convincing lead.
Though the race remained close she could not be caught.
Freedom finished second ahead of Chameleon, Deva, Liberty and Falcon.
After two long races, the third and deciding race was held over the shorter south lake course round Temple, Storrs and Ferry marks.
This proved to be a nail-biting affair in light winds, but Mistral came through to finish second behind Falcon, with Freedom third ahead of Deva.
The result was good enough to clinch the coveted trophy for Mistral.
Friday saw the 17s out again in the re-sail for the Kemp Cup, abandoned earlier in the season.
The winner was Fred Tattersall's Liberty, her first victory of the season, with David McCann's Freedom second.
With the light winds blowing from the south west and speedboats racing off Broad Leys, it was decided to use the Temple-Ferry course again.
Boats starting from the pin end of the mobile line got the advantage, with Gordon Pitt and Michael Hopkinson's Merrymaid rounding Temple just ahead of Falcon, but half-a-dozen boats were right up with them.
The leaders opened up a gap on the second lap and third time round, Falcon going on to win with Freedom and Chameleon second and third respectively.
