ONE of the major events on the national archery calendar visited Kendal when the 'Grand Northern' tournament took place in the grounds of Queen Katherine School at the weekend.
Several Grand Master and Master Bowmen were present at the two-day event hosted by Cumbrian County Archery Association.
Eighty-six competitors from all over the North of England and Scotland shot a traditional 'York and Hereford' round each day.
It is comprised of 144 arrows with the longest distance of 100 yards for men and 80 yards for women.
Cumbrians present were also competing in the Cumbrian County Championships - earlier postponed because of foot-and-mouth - and they gave a good account of themselves.
Dave Gregson from 'Pendragon Archers' took first place in both the County and Grand Northern.
Carolyn Jewell from 'Archery World', Flookburgh, was first Cumbrian and second in the Open section, both archers shooting in the Recurve bow class.
Other Cumbrians in the honours included:
1st & 2nd Gents Compound - Neil Horton (Vickers) and Ian Bertram (Eagle Bowmen).
1st County & 3rd Grand Northern Ladies Compound - Diana Sherlock (Kendal Bowmen).
1st Gents team event - Rod Faulkner, Tim Swaine & Roger Brasenell (Kendal Bowmen).
