YOUNG artists joined the celebrations marking the 125th anniversary of passenger traffic on the Settle -Carlisle railway line by painting the old line for an art competition.
More than 200 entries were sent in by local primary school children, and all the paintings have been displayed in Appleby Station.
The winning entry was by Charlotte Smith, of Milburn School, who won a trip for four on the line and £50 towards books for her school.
Runners up were Michaela Jade Sowerby, of Appleby School, and Sean Potts, of Long Marton School.
Bob Parmley, one of the organisers from Appleby Station, said: "We were overwhelmed by the number of entries, and the paintings really brightened up the station.
It really looks fantastic and shows the strong link between the local schools and the railway."
l Arriva Trains Northern, which runs trains on the Settle-Carlisle railway, aims to recruit a further 120 train drivers in the next six months to resolve its shortage of drivers.
The additional drivers will take the total number of train drivers up to more than 800.
Managing director Nigel Patterson said the whole rail industry had experienced an increase in demand for drivers since the introduction of the 35-hour week and the continuing growth of passenger and freight business.
