A STAR of television's 'Survivor' programme, Richard Owen met up with some remarkable survivors of a different kind when he visited the Lake District.
Richard, who struggled with meagre rations, extreme weather and poisonous snakes during his 40-day island ordeal, met children from Belarus, on holiday in the area thanks to a scheme run by the charity, Friends of Chernobyl's Children, South Lakes Group.
Escaping the attention of national media, Richard headed for Patterdale and met the children while staying at Gillside campsite.
This year 14 youngsters, aged between seven and ten, are enjoying a summer respite from their home area where they live with the legacy of the Chernobyl disaster which occurred before they were born.
Five of the Belarussian children enjoyed a weekend of camping, walking and swimming in the Patterdale area, and were pictured with Richard who said he was happy to support the cause.
