POLICE and local authority chiefs are to decide how a Government plan to radically increase the number of speed cameras could be implemented in Cumbria.

There are currently no fixed speed cameras in the county, but that could change following the news that, in future, money collected from fines will be available to re-invest in speed cameras.

Minister for Transport John Spellar announced earlier this week that the so-called "netting-off" scheme is to be extended nationally, following the success of a pilot scheme.

Figures from the eight pilot police areas, which include Cleveland and Strathclyde, show that on average at the camera sites the number of people killed or seriously injured fell by 47 per cent, compared to the average over the previous three years.
