IT WAS Sedgwick's worst weekend of the year as they crashed to 68 all out against championship challengers Westgate in Division One on Saturday then lost to Shireshead in the semi-final of the Hackney and Leigh Trophy on Sunday.
At 56-2 and with John Draper (31) and Nigel Dalzell (27) at the wicket, Sedgwick appeared to be going well against Westgate, but Peter Wilson - perhaps the best all-round cricketer currently playing the league - produced a devastating bowling spell of five for 16 and Danny Wilkinson at the other end also made life difficult for the batsmen as they were skittled out for 68 on the damp wicket.
Westgate had little trouble reaching the target of 69-2, particularly as Sedgwick no longer have the services of pace bowler George Willacy, who has a shoulder injury.
Next day Adam Hornby (24) and Jason Dalzell (23) were the only batsmen to make significant runs as Sedgwick posted a poor 115 all out in their Hackney and Leigh semi-final against Shireshead, Phil Oliver taking four for 31.
After a fine innings of 45 by Paul Yates it was always going to be Shireshead's day, although they made hard work of it faltering before their tail-enders lashed out to bring them victory on 116-8 with only two balls to spare.
By contrast Westgate can look back on an excellent weekend that also saw them lift the Over Sands Travel First Division Cup.
Milnthorpe lost the toss and were put in a damp, but drying, wicket.
Steve Bowman was Milnthorpe's top scorer with 38, but the side failed to take early run chances, which cost them dear later on.
Danny Wilkinson was man of the match taking three for 14 for Westgate, but Peter Wilson also played a key role with four for 25 as Milnthorpe were removed for 106.
Westgate cruised to victory on 109 with five wickets to spare.
Few league matches were completed on a day when rain got steadily worse through the afternoon, but Westgate's seven-point victory moves them to within three points of First Division leaders Arnside, whose declaration at 197-6 against Ingleton coincided with the downpour and they had to be content with three points for a rain affected draw.
Bottom club Bolton-le-Sands picked up their second win of the season with a three-wicket defeat of Shireshead, but it looks to be too late to save them from relegation
Silverdale continue to stride ahead at the top of Division Two, Paul Mason taking a magnificent six for 10 against a poor Windermere A side which could muster only eight players.
Silverdale made the 27 runs required to win for the loss of just one wicket.
John Coupe hit 104 for leaders Milnthorpe A in Division Four, but it was wasted effort as their declaration on 217-4 came far too late in the conditions and Coniston A were never able to bat.
