MORE than 150 members of the farming community attended a meeting at Sedbergh People's Hall to hear that vaccination the 'only way to stop the spread of foot-and-mouth'.

Dr Ruth Watkin, who has spoken at several meetings throughout the country during the last few weeks, was urging farmers to back her calls for government to adopt a policy of vaccination for livestock.

'Only the vaccination of all susceptible stocks of cattle and sheep on farms and fells in the active hot spots of Cumbria will halt any further extension of the disease in the area,' she said.

Dr Watkins told the farmers that there was still a way to safeguard the remaining livestock in South Lakeland and the Upper Eden Valley.

'A ring should be drawn around the infected sites.

All the animals within this ring should be vaccinated.

In this way the virus infection will be controlled and eradicated.'
