ONE of the most spectacular views in Kendal can now be enjoyed by less mobile people thanks to an innovative new free service.
Kentdale Land Rover of Kendal has joined forces with South Lakeland District Council to offer the elderly and those with walking problems the opportunity to visit Kendal Castle in a brand-new four wheel drive Land Rover.
The free service will operate on the mornings of August 31 and September 14 picking up at the Shakespeare Inn, on Highgate, every half-an-hour between 10am and 1pm.
Kentdale general manager Colin Shepherd came up with the idea after his mother wanted to visit the castle, but felt unable to reach it by foot.
He told the Gazette: 'Having talked through the idea with SLDC officers who have been very much involved with the improvements at Kendal Castle and with English Heritage, I felt it would be a good idea to try out these trips to see if there was any interest.'
Visitors can stay up at the castle for at least half-an-hour, choosing which service they return on.
Mr Shepherd added: 'Unfortunately the service will not be suitable for wheelchair users, but this may be a possibility for future occasions.
The driver will be on hand to offer assistance on and off the vehicle.'
Places on the shuttle service can be pre-booked by contacting Kentdale Land Rover 01539-814444.
