STEVE Chaplow, 36, senior instructor at the Kendal Chojinkai Karate Club, has been promoted to 4th Dan black belt.
Chaplow was awarded the higher grade after a week-long intensive training course at Butlin's, Skegness.
Chaplow began training at Kendal Leisure Centre under chief instructor Doug James 16 years ago and attained black-belt status within four years.
He has competed at local, national and international events and now officiates as a senior referee.
Family man Steve, who has two young sons, Troy and Travis, works locally as a building site supervisor.
Chaplow (pictured right) is congratulated by fellow instructor Lee Wilson, 3rd Dan, on his achievement.
The Kendal club meets at the Leisure Centre on Tuesdays and Fridays and enrolling for the new beginners' course starts in September.
