PLANS to build a major holiday village on the banks of the Lancaster Canal at Tewitfield are still on the cards after councillors re-approved the scheme.

Outline planning permission for 57 holiday units, shop, restaurant and a fitness centre on land just south of the Longlands Hotel was originally granted in 1997, along with full planning permission for a marina and six more holiday units.

But because the finer details of the 57-unit scheme have not been submitted within the three-year period as required, applicants Barry Robinson Leisure Ltd, which owns the Longlands Hotel at Tewitfield, re-applied to Lancaster City Council for planning consent to be renewed for a further two years.

A spokesman for the company told the Gazette they were pleased the application had been renewed, and they did intend going ahead with the project, but were waiting for a definite date from British Waterways on when work would start on restoring the Northern Reaches of the canal before they started work on the marina and holiday village.
