Fylde - 17, Kendal - 14
A DISASTROUS final five minutes saw Kendal slip to defeat against Fylde in an error-strewn opening match of the new National League 2 season on Saturday, writes Richard Daniels.
A draw had seemed the likely result with the scores level at 14-14 only for self-inflicted wounds to settle the visitors' fate right at the end of normal time.
Fly-half Mike Scott had relieved one dangerous spell of pressure with a penalty clearance up to halfway, but Kendal threw away the possession by failing to secure two lineouts on their own throw.
They then compounded the crime when penalised for going on the wrong side of a ruck close to their own posts an instant before Fylde knocked the ball forward.
Steve Gough completed the home team's jubilation by slotting over the penalty kick from the 22 line.
