COACHES from Kendal Squash Club hijacked normal PE lessons at Ghyllside Primary School in a bid to get more youngsters involved in the sport.
The taster course, which will last six weeks, aims to teach pupils from years five and six a variety of team games including 'Squicket' which has been specially adapted for situations when there is no access to squash courts.
All pupils who complete the course will be awarded the England Squash One- Star certificate as well as receiving the opportunity to join the newly-launched After Schools Club on Wednesday afternoons.
Ghyllside School's, Head Teacher, Mark Woodburn said: "The squash taster sessions fit in well with the National Curriculum and have been very popular with the pupils.
Hopefully, having enjoyed the taster sessions in the familiar environment of the school they will feel confident about going on to the after school sessions at the squash club."
The initiative is part of Kendal Squash Club's drive to increase community involvement in the sport and there will be a similar programme at Natland School after Easter.
The club's coaching organiser, Shaun Gorman said: "The primary school sessions have been great fun.
The kids are full of enthusiasm and all the coaches involved have really enjoyed working with them."
Anyone who would like any further information on the After School Club should contact Shaun on 01539 727359.
