FOUR Ambleside athletes finished in the first ten of Saturday's Causey Pike Fell Race which boasted a record entry of 122 runners, writes Mike Addison.

Highest placed was the in-form Nick Sharp who prevented Borrowdale from gaining a one, two, three by finishing third behind the Borrowdale pairing of Simon Booth and Jonathan Bland and ahead of Andrew Schofield in fourth.

Simon Stainer was sixth and he was supported by Jon Deegan in eighth and Mark Fleming in ninth, who won the first vet 40 prize.

Keswick's Louise Sharp - who lives in Kendal - was second lady in 28th, two places and only 14 seconds behind Scarborough's Rowan Smith who clocked 40-23 for the four-mile course which includes 1,780ft of climbing.

Helm Hill's Dave Richard-son was first vet 45 in 29th place while Ambleside's Lee Ming won the first lady vet 50 prize in 98th position.
