25 Years Ago-March 25, 1977-Scented export.
PERFUMES distilled amidst the beauty of the Lake District will soon be being used by the sophisticated ladies of America and many Eastern ladies will also be forsaking the products of their own country for the fresh fragrance of Lakeland, when plans for export are completed.
Lakeland Perfumes see conference business in the beautiful part of the Lake District, particularly in the winter months, as a means of enabling suppliers such as themselves to stay busy all the year.
They are heartened to the extent that they keep open their shops in Bowness, Ambleside and Grasmere throughout the year.
They know the potential from people taking part in conferences in the area.
Miss Donovan, owner of the Beech Hill Hotel where a world-wide conference was held, took samples of the perfume with her when she set off for the EEC in Brussels.
She says that the more suppliers requiring all-year-round trade who send their samples aboard with persons frequently travelling to foreign countries, the better the chance of gaining an entry into these lucrative markets.
50 Years Ago-March 29, 1952-Water shortage.
REPORTS from recent summers show that Grange-over-Sands is particularly affected by drought, even to the extent that householders must sit up into the wee sma' hours to collect whatever meagre drops of water may come from the mains.
For a relatively small community a scheme to augment the present supply would prove an expensive job.
It will, of course, have to be done if Grange is to maintain the status of a first-class residential centre as well as a holiday resort of some note.
Mr R.H.
Booth contends that the least expensive way of providing extra water is from an underground supply which he proposed to test by sinking a borehole.
He began this at his own expense in the car park of the Grange Motor and Cycle Company.
But the planning authorities have advised the company that this is development, and presumably may be charged to them, as such.
The work, therefore, has stopped.
The public-spirited prospector for water has, however, resorted to form filling and the subject will come before the planning authority.
Mr Booth believes if the underground supply is satisfactory, that his idea will save the ratepayers £60,000 on any alternative scheme.
100 Years Ago-March 29, 1902-True Scot!
JAMES Macdonald is a true Scot.
He was discovered begging at Milnthorpe, and was called upon to explain his conduct before the magistrates.
He did so in the finest lowland dialect, declaring that it was the Sabbath, and it wounded his conscience to spend such a day in the workhouse.
Unfortunately, for Mr Macdonald's pious professions there was reason to believe it was not the workhouse Sunday at which he jibbed, but the stone-breaking on Monday.
As Shakespeare said: "Conscience makes cowards of us all." And this poor Scotsman's conscience has got him into gaol for seven days.
Another martyr!
150 Years Ago - March 28, 1852- End of the news.
MANY of our readers are perhaps not aware that by a train recently put on, which leaves London at 6.30am, the public of Manchester and Liverpool are able to receive the morning papers soon after 12 noon.
The public north of the line, however, are still debarred from sharing in this welcome acceleration of news and the convenience to passengers by the train in question, going no farther than Newton Junction; a circumstance the more to be regretted because the only hiatus in the arrangement of the trains which prevents the newspapers etc.
being thus carried into the north is the short distance between Newton Junction and Preston, as a train already leaves Preston which would bring the passengers and newspapers to Lancaster at 1.30pm, to Kendal at 2.30pm and to Carlisle at 4.40pm, if the above short link had only been added.
