SIR, Up to the present time it would seem that South Lakeland District Council has, in effect, been saying if you cannot use a bus or cannot walk a good distance to collect a bus pass, then really, that is just very unfortunate for you (Letters March 29).
Under the terms of the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995, discrimination occurs when a service provider treats a disabled person less favourably for a reason relating to their disability.
It would, therefore, seem, at least to me, that the new bus pass arrangement is not meeting the requirements of the DDA for those disabled people who cannot use a bus because of their disability.
From correspondence that I have had with the council it would seem that they may now be taking another look at this important issue.
Let's hope that they come up with a solution that is acceptable to all those disabled people who cannot use the bus.
Larry Walters, Natland
