AN ULVERSTON window firm has apologised for cutting down an ancient hedgerow of native ash, crab apple and sycamore.
Concerned neighbours wrote 13 letters opposing plans by Ulverston Window Systems to extend its premises at North Lonsdale Road, and their main concern was the removal of the mature hedge.
In a report, South Lakeland District Council's planning committee heard the hedge had been removed while extensions were being built at the former television repair premises.
The hedge was around three to four metres high, and formed an important screen between the window firm and nearby houses.
The agent for Ulverston Window Systems said the company had not been aware permission was needed to remove the hedge, and had "every intention" to replant the boundary when the work was completed, added the report.
SLDC's development control manager Peter Ridgway said the applicants had apologised for removing the hedge.
Committee chairman Coun Janette Jenkinson said: "It was a real shame this hedge has gone, and I'm glad the applicants are going to do something about it."
Last year planning permission was given for two extensions at the site, more than doubling the size of the original building.
Planners heard the proposed extension was modest in scale, and the simple design was in keeping with the main building.
They approved the plans, with conditions about replanting the hedge and reinstating a drainage dyke which had been filled in, leading to concerns among neighbours about possible flooding.
