SOME strange artifacts could be spotted on the streets of Ulverston this weekend as the town's heritage centre packs its collections for a move to new premises.
A turn-of-the-century fire cart and parts of an elderly clock are among the larger possessions that may have to be carried through the streets en route to temporary storage as The Heritage Centre closes its current Lower Brook Street premises on Saturday.
Director Carol Bennett explained that the lease was running out on the former 18th century sherry warehouse so the group was now looking for more spacious accommodation.
A new home for the centre's shop and offices has already been found at Hanover House, on Victoria Road, and should open shortly.
"I believe the landlord is decorating at the moment, so as soon as the paint dries we will be there," said Mrs Bennett.
But the bulk of the centre's local history collection will remain safely in storage until a larger property can be found.
Mrs Bennett stressed people who had donated historical treasures to the museum should not be concerned about the move.
"Everything is being cared for and nothing will be lost," she said.
Some items may even get a special airing before new premises are found in temporary exhibitions planned for Ulverston Library.
Meanwhile the Heritage group is hoping a bid to take over the Sir John Barrow Cottage at Dragley Beck will be successful so it can run it as a separate centre dedicated to the famous Ulverston son and promoter of Arctic exploration.
Marion Grave, of fellow Ulverston attraction The Laurel and Hardy Museum, said plans to move in with the Heritage Centre were still possible if big enough, town centre premises could be found.
l Anyone with secure storage space to spare for some of the heritage centre's larger artifacts is asked to contact the heritage group on 01229-580820.
