MUSIC to the ears this week is the news that Ian Jones and his Cumbria Choral Initiative buddies are staging Vaughan Williams's Sea Symphony in the Jubilee Celebrations on Saturday, July 13, in Kendal Parish Church.

Ian tells me that the choir rehearsals will start at the end of April and he is keen for singers to sign up for what promises to be another outstanding choral event: "The Sea Symphony is one of the most rewarding and life-affirming pieces in the repertoire and not to be missed.

"The Jubilee concert is, fittingly, entirely of music by this most English of composers.

His wonderful Fantasia on a Theme by

Thomas Tallis for string orchestra will fill the church with the intensity of string sound which so characterises the best of English music."

Roland Fudge leads the orchestra, with two rising young soloists, soprano Kathryn McGuckin and Korean bass Gum Ho Shin, singing.

CCI is also planning a major youth project for summer 2004 designed to encourage young singers to take up, or become more involved, in choral singing.
