CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Appleby's historic Shire Hall have received the backing of Penrith and The Border MP David Maclean.
As previously reported in The Westmorland Gazette, Cumbria County Council is considering selling the property as it "has deteriorated to the tune of £90,000 since its closure as a magistrates court in 2002."
Appleby Mayor, Lance Thwaytes, said it was " reprehensible" that the council was thinking about giving up public ownership of the building, which was once an assize court.
" The Shire Hall should stay in the public domain as a library, fire station or it could be even converted into a museum," said Mr Thwaytes.
Mr Maclean inspected the Shire Hall, along with representatives of the campaigners.
Mr Maclean said: "I had no idea the hall had such a tremendous history.
It is in reasonable condition but needs proper development and restoration to its former grandeur.
It must not be turned into flats or office units.
"The building has the potential for so many uses in keeping with its structure and history.
It must be retained as a county and Appleby resource.
We must all redouble our efforts to find finance to make sure this extraordinary building is not wasted but is available for the whole nation."
The Shire Hall is a listed Grade II building.
