A YOUNG motorist who was involved in a death crash the day after he passed his driving test was yesterday jailed for four and a half years.
Peter Storey, 20, of Scotforth Road, Lancaster had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Two other local men also admitted a charge of dangerous driving.
They were: Stephen Hankey, 21, of New Street, Halton, and Craig Holme, 21, of Rossall Road, Scale Hall.
They were each jailed for 18 months.
On February 18 last year, prison officer Stephen Maguire, 32, was fatally injured while out on a Sunday cycle ride.
He left a widow, Julie, and a daughter, Erica, now aged two.
Julie said after the Preston Crown Court trial: "I am just relieved this ordeal is over and I am glad that the court recognised all three drivers were at fault."
The court heard suggestions that three cars had been travelling at speed, two of them allegedly travelling up to 100mph on a 60mph stretch.
Mr Robert Fordham QC, prosecuting, said Mr Maguire cycled to work every day.
On most Sundays he went for a long cycle rides around the South Lakes.
