Plans are afoot to build an external staircase and viewing platform on the North West tower of Kendal Castle.

Children have used the tower as an unofficial climbing frame, and South Lakeland District Council feel the staircase will improve access for visitors as well as reduce safety fears.

SLDC planning officer Kate Lawson said: "The staircase and viewing platform would enhance the castle.

The design is similar to the one already on one of the other towers, and will make that part of the castle more open to visitors and remove potential safety problems."

The proposed staircase and platform are still awaiting full planning approval.
