AN APPEAL has been made for information on men and women from North Lancashire who died during the world wars.

The Lancaster Military Heritage Group is embarking on a project to produce booklets for parishes in the area including information on all those people listed on war memorials in towns or villages within the Lancaster district.

Brigadier James Dennis, of the heritage group, said ideally they wanted to gather together as much information on every person who is named on the memorials.

He said although he could ascertain certain details from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, one of the main aims of the project was that it involved the community.

The kind of information that would be included in the booklets would be photographs, personal tales and anecdotes, details of where the men and women went to school, and military memorabilia including certificates or medals.

The group has been awarded a £1,600 grant from the National Lottery Awards for All fund, and letters have been sent out to parish councils in Carnforth, Arkholme, Melling, Nether and Over Kellet, Silverdale, Warton, Whittington, and Priest Hutton, asking if they would support the scheme.

Exhibitions are due to go up in libraries highlighting the project and encouraging people to get involved in the project, which is the group's way of marking The Queen's Golden Jubilee.

It is hoped the booklets will be finished in time for this year's Armistice events.
