EARLY-morning downpours cleared in time for the Royal Windermere Yacht Club's Flying Fifteen fleet to prepare in damp conditions for the final race in the Spring Trophy.
The fleet sailed to a start line just south of the Ferry line in south lake, to take advantage of the gentle southerly breeze for a port-hand, Olympic-style course using the Temple, Storrs and Ferry turning marks.
Doroffee, with a third and second place, and Ffor Joy, with a third and a fourth were in contention for the trophy.
Boats spread across the lake on the first windward leg, with several coming together at the first mark.
Andrew Kirk in Zephyr and John and Dorothy Wright in Doroffee started the first spinnaker leg neck-and-neck, but at Storrs the wind died and changed direction, giving Frank Kelly and Brian Garvey in Fiscal Folly an advantage which they built on during the spinnaker reach to the Ferry mark, their choice of the eastern side of the lake proving best for the fickle breezes.
At Temple mark Fiscal Folly started the final spinnaker leg in the lead to win for the second week in succession, but with insufficient starts to qualify for the trophy, which went to John and Dorothy Wright in Doroffee.
Race result: 1 F.
Kelly & B.
Garvey, Fiscal Folly; 2 J.
