IF YOU go down to the woods today you are sure of a big surprise - in the form of the two bears, reports Zoe Casson.
For two female Spectacled Bears called Alice and Mona have arrived at the South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Dalton-in-Furness, from Paris
Zoo.
And today two more of their kind called, Zamora and Zepita, were due to go on show at the zoo after being flown in from Zurich yesterday.
The Spectacled Bears, which get their name because white markings around their eyes make them look as though they are wearing glasses, are the first of their kind ever to be kept in Britain.
The first twin bears to arrive are three-years-old and the second pair are aged two.
When fully grown, they will weigh 65 kilograms - about 10 stone - and stretch up to six-feet tall when stood on their back legs.
Each day the bears are fed a diet of fruit, fish and bread.
Every other day they are given a treat of
porridge oats mixed with honey.
When the bears are five years old, one pair will be shipped out to make way for a male Spectacled Bear because the owner of the zoo, David Gill, is hoping they will mate.
Mr Gill said: " The first two bears have settled in really well and for the first few days we have kept them enclosed so they
get used to their surroundings.
"We have also had to train them not to go near the electric fences, as that is the only thing that will keep them in their enclosure away from visitors."
