TOWN councillors have agreed to help fund a festival which aims to breath new life to the Kirkland area of Kendal.

A host of activities from face-painting to fireworks as well as musical entertainment throughout the day has been planned for the event on July 13.

The cost of the event is estimated to be around £9,000 with some funding already promised and an application for lottery funding due to be sent off.

Kendal Town Council agreed to finance the funding shortfall, which is currently estimated to be around £2,300, up to a maximum of £3,000.

Despite concerns from some councillors that this was a lot of money, and would mean other groups would expect similar support, Coun Ewing said the money would be a " one-off grant to get the festival started and ensure it was a success."
