MOTORISTS have been stuck in large traffic tailbacks on the A590 following a collision between a heavy goods vehicle and a car in the High Newton area.
During the accident, which happened shortly before noon today, animal carcasses spilled onto the road from the lorry.
Both east and west-bound carriageways were blocked and at one point traffic was backed up as far as Newby Bridge.
Police diverted traffic along the A592 from Newby Bridge and traffic in the other direction went round by Grange.
Police are reporting no injuries.
The road has been closed for disinfectant teams to move into the area and clear up the spillage.
The police are hoping thte road will re-open for four this afternoon to accommodate weekend traffic.
