THE ORGANISER of Sunday's Great Langdale Marathon and Half-Marathon say it was the "best-ever" running of the event.

Rod Berry said: "Plenty of sun allowed runners to enjoy the spectacular views and the personal challenge of tackling a unique race and course.

"We had a lovely letter afterwards thanking us for a low-key, friendly event which is what we are all about."

Scottish veteran Terry Coyle held off Radcliffe's Peter Bates to complete a hat-trick of wins in the marathon in 2hr 57min 20sec.

Hilary Greaves of Chester-le-Street was the first woman in 4-02-16.
