THE new urban regeneration company for West Cumbria and Furness has given the green light to a £15m grant for Barrow.
The money will now come from the North West Development Agency to underpin a £38m six-year programme to regenerate swaths of redundant and disused land across Barrow under the project title 'Building the Future'.
Work on the project will be led by the seven-year-old Heart of Barrow partnership and the new West Cumbria and Furness Urban Regeneration Company (URC).
Although the URC is sponsored by the NWDA, it could not draw down development agency cash until it met to approve the project.
New URC chairman Michael Hulme said the group had "acted swiftly" to ensure the £15m grant flowed into Barrow as soon as possible.
The URC is made up of seven directors including the chairman and leaders of Cumbria County Council, Allerdale District Council, Barrow Borough Council and Copeland Borough Council.
Mr Helme himself is visiting research fellow at Lancaster University and chairs the Teleconomy Group plc - a commercial research company specialising in behavioural research.
