PLANS for a major redevelopment of a lakeside hotel have met with a mixed reaction from Lakes parish councillors.

As previously reported in The Westmorland Gazette, the Low Wood Hotel, near Ambleside, has drawn up a package of plans to help it overcome the impact of the 10mph speed limit.

After a site visit to the hotel, parish councillors decided to recommend for approval proposals to build external hot tubs and sauna and a conservatory extension to the hotel's bistro.

An application to create an underpass running from the hotel underneath the A591 towards the lakeside was also recommended for approval, although there was some concern at the potential loss of trees.

But councillors urged that Lake District National Park Authority planners should refuse plans for a 24-bedroom extension and a multi-function building at the water ski centre over the road.

Clerk Michael Presland reported some councillors had likened the proposed multi-function building to a supermarket, and were worried at the impact on views from the lake.

Concerns were also expressed that hotel access would be inadequate to cope with the additional traffic that would be generated by both developments.

National park planning officer Norman Atkins, who attended the parish meeting, said that planning committee members had visited the site and were due to discuss the application next month.
