A SHOPPING basket of food bought in Windermere or Ambleside can cost up to 60 per cent more than the same basket bought in Kendal, claims a survey by Morecambe Bay Health Promotion.
This makes it difficult for people on low incomes living in more rurally-isolated areas to afford a healthy diet, says Food and Health Adviser Vivien Prendiville.
Alhough there has been a huge increase in the availability of locally-produced food - farmers markets, for example - people say they want better access to fruit and vegetables which have been grown in the area.
This has prompted a 'local food for local people' campaign, which will be launched at the inaugural meeting of the South Lakeland Food Forum on Wednesday, October 2, at Lane Farm, Crooklands.
The forum will explore ways of developing and funding community initiatives - community gardens and orchards, for example, market gardens, food co-operatives, school growing and catering schemes.
