ENTHUSIASTIC adventurers in the Furness area are being asked to raise money for a cancer charity by taking part in one of three activities.

The activities on offer by Marie Curie Cancer Care, based in Barrow, range from cycling along the highways and byways of Vietnam to a ten-day trek in Peru.

The fund-raising group, which provides free nursing services to cancer-sufferers 365-days a year, is also looking for athletic people to take part in the Great North Run in Newcastle on October 6 or the London Marathon next year to raise sponsorship on its behalf.

People who sign up to the cycling or ten-day trek challenge have to raise a minimum of £2,500 in sponsorship but help is available from the fund-raising team in Barrow to reach the target.

The two trips will take part in January and February next year and all accommodation and food is provided.

Community fund-raising co-ordinator Elaine White said about the Vietnam trip: "Having seen the photographs and listened to a presentation from one of last year's participants, I can assure you that this is a wonderful adventure for those taking part.

The Vietnamese people are so friendly and supportive of the participants."

For more information about the fund-raising activities or to register to take part, people can contact Mrs White on 01229-822003.

l A retired community nurse is to launch The Cancer Charity Shop on Dalton Road in Barrow as part of breast cancer awareness month on Tuesday, October 1, at 11am.

Pam Dilkes worked as a Macmillan nurse in the town for more than 15 years before she retired.

To show support for the fund-raising scheme, people can buy a pink ribbon for £1 or a cute toy puppy for £ 4.99.
