FIRST Division new boys Victoria SC displayed fine team spirit to hold reigning champions Wetheriggs United to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, depriving the Penrith-based side of two precious points in the bid to keep their title.
Vics might even have sneaked a victory over the current league leaders with a bit more composure in front of goal after a battling display full of defensive resolve.
In a scrappy start as the sides came to terms with the firm pitch, Wetheriggs took a 21st-minute lead from a free kick when Kevin Walker's stooping header to a low free kick gave the Vics' stand-in keeper no chance.
Vics looked threatening when getting their wide men into play, but did not create much in front of goal.
Wetheriggs leading scorer Dan Broadley was not quite on song and Vics dealt with a tame header from him before the striker nodded the ball over the angle after chasing a ball over the top.
Vics' best effort in the first half came when Phil Graham unleased a well-struck 25-yard snap shot which crashed off the post.
Another chance fell to Broadley at the other end, but his shot lacked power.
Wetheriggs controlled the midfield in the second half, but Walker, who had been well policed by centre-half Graham Johnson, fired over and at the other end Vics went close when the keeper palmed a shot wide.
Vics earned a deserved equaliser from the half-cleared corner as Ryan Wallace crossed for Graham to knock in from six yards with the keeper stranded.
Five minutes later, Graham was put through on his own but the keeper saved off his legs.
Wetheriggs had several shots afterwards, but failed to put one on target and Vics more than deserved their point.
