BENEFIT cheats are costing Eden tax-payers tens of thousands of pounds.
False housing benefit claims and non-declaration of earnings were found to be the most common types of fraud in a report by Eden District Council's Benefits Investigation Team.
EDC's resources committee heard that last year the Investigation Team identified 64 frauds and more than £28,000 in false payments following more than 200 inquiries.
Two of the frauds resulted in prosecution.
Resources committee chairman Coun John Moffat said the council was determined to crack down on "a small minority who abuse the system".
