WALKING Roman Roads in the Lonsdale and the Eden Valley, by Philip Graystone. University of Lancaster, £10.95.

This is the fourth and final volume in the journey and exploration of Roman Roads in North West England, which wraps up the author's account of the great Roman military highway from Chester to Hadrian's Wall.

The book gives a detailed account of Roman roads in the North West, which are the best known traces left by the Romans during the four centuries when this country formed part of their far-flung empire.

To make the book more interesting, it is not just about roads, there are references to Roman landmarks, place names of Roman origin, and historic background.

It gives a greater insight into the history of the surrounding area, takes the reader on a journey through every twist and turn of the road, and points out viewing spots.

With 16 sketch maps and 48 photographs, the illustrated guides make up a series of walks, making this not just a good read but a possible physical exploration and photographs highlight to the explorer what may be seen along the way.
