THE latest sexy' idea to improve life in Morecambe's West End is a waste of time and money, claims a leading local councillor.

Newly installed alley gates designed to deter and cut down on crime have been fitted in the West End, using European regeneration money.

But Cllr Trevor Tattersall claims the new gates don't work - and what's more they make the area look an eyesore.

"Lots of people have lost their keys already, so the gates are left open, which makes a mockery of having them there in the first place," says Cllr Tattersall, who has decided not to stand for re-election in May.

"I can understand that it sounds like a sexy idea while being discussed at a meeting, but it's impractical.

"One of the gates has been fitted next to a wall that's only about two foot high so it's useless as a deterrent. I'm sure we could be using the money for something more important. The problem in the West End is not a lack of alley gates, it's a lack of law and order."

Cllr Tattersall goes on: "I know it's not fashionable to raise concerns about the area because you're perceived as a moaner' but millions of pounds have been spent on so-called solutions and it's just as bad as it's always been. As far as I'm concerned the people who live and work in the area and get by despite all the problems deserve a medal."
