FORMER K Shoes worker Coun Tony Rothwell is to become the new Mayor of Kendal.
His election was proposed by Coun Jean Ewing at this week's meeting of Kendal Town Council. She said that during his year as deputy mayor he had shown the enthusiasm and commitment that were so necessary to be mayor, and had displayed his knowledge of Kendal.
Coun Charles Batteson also expressed his support, and said it was poignant that a former K worker should become mayor in the year that shoe-making was to come to an end in Kendal.
Coun Rothwell thanked his fellow councillors for their comments.
Meanwhile, a ballot was held after Couns Marilyn Molloy and Gwen Murfin were both proposed as deputy mayor. Coun Molloy was elected.
