A national scheme to provide evidence of age has won the backing of South Lakeland District Council's Crime and
Disorder Reduction Partnership.
Chief Inspector Martin Connelly, of Kendal Police, said the introduction of Citizen Cards was a voluntary scheme for young people in order for them to give proof of their date of birth when asking for services or for when they bought goods from shops.
He said the scheme was "being rolled out" in Barrow and it would add weight to cards being introduced in South Lakeland if the partnership gave it their support.
Mr Connelly said the cards were free for 16 to 17-year-olds but would cost £5 for over 18s and £3 for anyone under 15.
