A DETERMINED drive to protect the local environment from the impact of tourism has won international recognition for Cumbria, the Lake District, as a flagship destination.

Cumbria Tourist Board has passed stringent tests for the third year running to reclaim Green Globe 21 status for 2003, highlighting its commitment to sustainable tourism.

The award reflects the local tourism industry's achievements in balancing the needs of tourism, the environment, local communities and the economy with CTB taking the lead, supported by public and private sector stakeholders.

Cumbria was the world's first Green Globe 21 destination and holds its own as the only part of the UK to have achieved the accolade.
