CANDIDATES for the Eden District Council elections on May 1 have put their names forward.
Lance Thwaytes is to stand down as Mayor of Appleby, and he is standing against fellow Appleby town councillor Keith Morgan for the Appleby (Appleby) seat on the district council.
Both men are standing as Independents. The Mayor said he was contesting the post because he believed Eden District Council did not "do enough for Appleby". The decision to stand for the district council came as a surprise to the Mayoress of Appleby, Fiona Thwaytes - she had already signed the official candidate papers for Coun Morgan to stand in the election.
Elsewhere, the Liberal Democrats are putting up candidates against current Independents. In the Orton with Tebay ward, Mark Alan Saunders John is standing on the Lib Dem platform against sitting councillor Bernard Thornborrow. And in Shap, Lib Dem Neil Hughes is to stand against current councillor Maurice Weightman.
In Kirkby Stephen, only one candidate is standing, Coun Trevor Charles Ladhams (Independent), though there are two seats up for election.
