MILNTHORPE Corinthians received a boost in their bid to avoid relegation from the West Lancs League when they posted their best result of the season, a comfortable 5-1 win over fellow bottom three side Springfields on Tuesday night.

Able to muster their strongest line-ups, the Milnthorpe side took a 2-0 lead by half time with goals from Mark Smith and Steve McQueen.

Springfields were reduced to 10 men when they had a man sent off and Corinthians consolidated in the second half with further strikes from Brian Penning, Mark Goulding and a substitute.

The highly-prized victory came after earning a battling point in a hard-fought 1-1 draw at home to Fulwood Amateurs on Saturday, Pennington levelling the scores after Fulwood had gone ahead from the penalty spot.

It means Corinthians are still not out of danger, but a victory or a draw away to fellow strugglers Norcross and Warbreck, who are four points adrift of them, on Saturday would be enough to confirm their safety.

Corinthians wrap up their campaign at home to Burnley United next Friday (7pm kick-off).

In their latest result, Corinthians Reserves went down 2-1 at Fleetwood Hesketh on Monday.
